Balancing Academics and Athletics: Aoife O’Brien’s Journey as a DCU Sports Scholar
Hi my name is Aoife O’Brien I am a 2nd year Business Studies student. Alongside my studies, I’m proud to be part of the Athlete Scholarship Programme, which has been a fantastic source of support as I strive to balance my academic ambitions with my sporting endeavours.
What inspired you to choose DCU Business School for your studies?
Choosing what college I attend was a decision I made with great care. As an athlete, I’ve always admired how DCU stands out as a hub for sportspeople. The university has a great reputation for nurturing athletic talent while fostering academic excellence, a balance that’s not easy to achieve but essential for someone like me, who has big goals in both arenas. When it came to deciding my field of study, business was the obvious choice for me. I’ve always had an interest in understanding how organisations function and finding innovative ways to solve problems. DCU Business School, known for its high standards and industry connections, was the perfect fit. Its reputation for preparing students for real-world success made it an easy decision for me.
How has being a sports scholar shaped your student experience at DCU?
Being a sports scholar at DCU has profoundly heightened my student experience. One of the most rewarding opportunities was connecting with other cyclists in the university. Together, we successfully revived the DCU Cycling Club, which had been inactive for several years. The scholarship has also provided me with vital flexibility, allowing me to manage the demands of training camps and competitions without compromising my education. Additionally, access to top-tier gym facilities has been invaluable. Being able to fit in a training session between lectures has made balancing academics and my training much more seamless. Overall, the sports scholarship has given me exceptional support and structure, helping me navigate the challenges of pursuing a dual career as both a student and an athlete. This balance has allowed me to grow during my time at DCU.
How do you balance academic responsibilities with your sporting commitments?
Planning is the key aspect of balancing my academic and sporting commitments. I’ve found that being proactive and organised helps me stay on top of both areas. The support I receive from Molly and Yvonne has been invaluable, they’ve guided me in creating structured plans to manage my time effectively. At times, it’s necessary to reach out directly to lecturers to explain my situation and put a face to the name behind the emails. This personal approach has helped build understanding and flexibility when it comes to deadlines or attendance. Balancing academics and sports is undoubtedly challenging, but staying disciplined and tackling tasks early lessens much of the stress. While it’s not always easy, planning and open communication have made it possible to excel in both areas.
Can you share a memorable moment or achievement during your time as a sports scholar?
One of the most memorable moments in my career came this September when I was selected to represent Ireland at the Elite World Championships in Switzerland. At just 20 years old, this was a huge milestone for me. Competing in such a world-class field was something I hadn’t expected to happen for at least another year or two, making it even more special. The timing was challenging, as the competition overlapped with the first two weeks of college. However, by reaching out to my lecturers and explaining my situation, the stress was significantly reduced, and I was able to focus fully on the competition. I was truly grateful for the understanding and support from my lecturers during such a pivotal moment in my career. This experience highlighted how important the support systems at DCU are in helping athletes like myself thrive both academically and in my sporting profession.
How has DCU Business School contributed to your personal and professional growth?
DCU Business School has played a pivotal role in helping me grow both personally and professionally. One area where I’ve seen significant development is in working on group projects. Through group projects at DCU, I’ve learned how to navigate the challenges of collaboration, as working with others can sometimes be difficult but ultimately rewarding when approached correctly. While cycling is often perceived as an individual sport, the reality is that it also requires strong teamwork, whether during training or in races. These experiences have taught me how to communicate more effectively, delegate tasks, and integrate different perspectives into a shared goal, all skills that are essential both in sport and in the business world. Working alongside classmates with diverse strengths and backgrounds has provided me with a broader perspective on team dynamics, which I can now apply to both my sporting career and my academic endeavours.
What advice would you give to future sports scholars pursuing a degree at DCU?
My advice to future sports scholars at DCU is that the journey is a collaborative partnership, you get out of it what you put into it. The balance between academic work and athletic commitments can be challenging, but the key is communication. If you’re struggling to manage the balance, don’t hesitate to reach out. DCU’s support systems are there to assist you, whether that’s through the sports scholarship coordinator, your lecturers, or your fellow students. Being open about your needs and seeking help when necessary can make all the difference. The university understands the demands of being both a student and an athlete, and they are always ready to provide guidance and flexibility to ensure you succeed in both areas. Lastly, take full advantage of all the resources available and most importantly enjoy the process !
