Aviation’s environmental externalities demand effective management. Our Sustainable Aviation and Green Innovation Micro-Credential module empowers students with the knowledge and background to develop sustainable strategies and solutions for the aviation industry.
With a focus on innovative technologies and practices, including Sustainable Aviation Fuels, advanced aircraft technology, and optimised air traffic control procedures, this module explores ways to enhance sustainability across the sector.
Environmental economics and its application to aviation take center stage in this module. You will delve into critical topics such as local air quality, noise pollution, and climate change. You will also gain insights into the cost and complexity of implementing green technologies while examining the strengths and limitations of measures like biofuels, batteries, and carbon capture and storage.

What Can You Expect From This Module?
On successful completion of this module students will be well placed to:
- Assess environmental policies and practices in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and feasibility
- Develop strategies for aviation to mitigate externalities, but also adapt to phenomena like climate change impacts
- Develop a critical understanding of how technology can enhance sustainability and its associated challenges, applying this to an organisational context
- Explore green solutions as a whole and evaluate which solution is appropriate for the short, mid and long term per sector of the aviation industry

General Entry Requirements
For admission to the Graduate Certificate in Aviation Sustainability, Leadership and Innovation candidates must hold one of the following:
- A 2.1 Honours degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent international qualification along with 3 years of work experience in the aviation industry
- An equivalent professional qualification (ATCO, CPL) along with 3 years of work experience in the aviation industry.
- 5 years’ relevant work experience in the aviation industry may be considered
Things to note:
- Applicants who have achieved a 2.2 Honours degree may still obtain a place. This will depend on availability of places and on obtaining high grades in relevant modules on their undergraduate programme.
- Recent graduates with less than 3 years’ relevant work experience in the aviation industry, or with work experience in a different industry, who have the equivalent of a first class Honours degree may be considered.
- International candidates who are non-native speakers of English must satisfy the University of their competency in the English language. More information about English language requirements for DCU Business School can be found here.
- Applicants who require a study visa for the purposes of studying at DCU, are advised to apply as early as possible. If you need a study visa and are a Non EU student, you are not eligible to apply for part time programmes as study visas are only granted for full time programmes.
