DCU Business School Hosts Sustainability Workshop Exploring Circular Economy Transitions

On 26 May 2025, DCU Business School hosted a sustainability workshop focused on the shift from linear to circular economic models. The event was led by Professor Amrik Sohal of Monash University, Australia, an internationally recognised expert in sustainability and operations management.

Professor Sohal guided participants through key concepts such as the Value Hill framework, showcasing research, international case studies, and practical tools for SMEs starting their circular economy journey. His insights provided a clear path for how businesses can rethink value creation and resource use.

The session also featured contributions from Irish experts actively shaping the sustainability agenda.

Orla Conduit (Department of Justice) presented research on integrating sustainable ICT practices in the public sector.

Miriam Sweeney (SEAI) shared findings on the corporate sector’s role in progressing Ireland’s commitments under the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Brian Cleere (Cleere Project Office) delivered a practical industry lens, highlighting real-world challenges and opportunities in embedding sustainability into project delivery.

A closing roundtable discussion brought together academics, SME leaders, and county council representatives to unpack the complexities of measuring progress in sustainability transitions. Key themes included the potential emergence of “Transition Brokers” to support systemic change, and what structural and policy conditions are needed for widespread adoption of circular economy principles in Ireland.
