DCU Business School Undergraduates attend International Entrepreneurial Bootcamp in Berlin
Last week, final-year students from DCU Business School travelled to Berlin for a transformative experience at the International Entrepreneurship Bootcamp. Held from the 14th to the 18th of October 2024, the week-long event was part of the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), bringing together students from DCU, HWR Berlin (School of Economics and Law), and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Finland. The bootcamp provided a dynamic platform for students to collaborate on real-world sustainability challenges within Berlin’s vibrant start-up ecosystem.
A Practical Learning Experience with Global Impact
This unique initiative offered students hands-on learning opportunities through cross-cultural collaboration and industry engagement. Teams of students from DCU, HWR Berlin, and Metropolia Helsinki worked together on live challenge-based projects for companies 2zero and VisitBerlin. Their task? To develop innovative and sustainable solutions for Berlin’s tourism sector, a key industry in the city’s economy.
A core element of the Erasmus+ BIP programme is the academic recognition students receive. Each participant successfully earned 3 ECTS credits for their work, which will be recorded in a Diploma Supplement developed by DCU’s Registry and International Office to ensure that the learning outcomes align with both academic and international standards.
In addition to academic recognition, the DCU International Office provided each student with €500 in Erasmus+ funding to cover flights and accommodation. Meals during the day were generously provided by HWR Berlin, ensuring that financial concerns did not interfere with the students’ ability to fully engage with the bootcamp.
Throughout the intensive week, students participated in a series of workshops covering entrepreneurial fundamentals, including empathy mapping, innovation engineering, ideation, prototyping, design thinking, and lean start-up methodologies. The culmination of the programme saw students present their solutions to senior executives from 2zero and VisitBerlin, showcasing their ability to apply these skills in real-world scenarios.
Insights from the Entrepreneurial Hub of Berlin
For many students, Berlin’s start-up culture proved to be an inspiring backdrop. As Professor Colm O’Gorman of DCU Business School reflects:
“Last week the International Entrepreneurship Bootcamp in Berlin, supported by the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme, provided an opportunity for our students to develop their entrepreneurial skills and to immerse themselves in Berlin’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. DCU Business School students worked on ‘industry challenges’ in teams with students from our international partners, HWR Berlin, Germany and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Finland. I was very proud to see the energy and expertise that our DCU students brought to developing solutions to these challenges. The week in Berlin is an example of the transformative, practical and industry relevant learning opportunities we at DCU Business School are committed to offering our students.”
One of the week’s highlights was a visit to The Drivery Berlin, a cutting-edge space dedicated to mobility technologies. Formerly Germany’s largest newspaper print house, The Drivery is now a global hub for innovation in transportation. Dr. Eric Clinton of DCU Business School shared his thoughts on the experience:
“Berlin is not just a global hub of creativity and entrepreneurship, but also a city rich in culture and history. What an incredible opportunity for our DCU students to immerse themselves in Berlin’s start-up ecosystem. A highlight of the week was to experience The Drivery Berlin, formerly Germany’s largest newspaper print house, now repurposed as a leading global hub for mobility-based technologies. To see such groundbreaking mobility technologies, including the Delorean car, was truly inspiring.”
The visit to The Drivery served as a tangible reminder of how far-reaching innovation can be and how entrepreneurial thinking is crucial for industries such as mobility and tourism.
Building Cross-Cultural and Industry Connections
Beyond the technical skills gained, the bootcamp fostered invaluable cross-cultural collaboration. Working in teams with students from HWR Berlin and Metropolia Helsinki allowed participants to experience different approaches to problem-solving, benefiting from diverse perspectives. These collaborations resulted in creative, sustainable solutions that not only met industry expectations but also emphasised the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges.
Students also had the chance to network with entrepreneurs, innovators, and industry professionals, broadening their understanding of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and laying the foundation for future professional opportunities.
A Transformative Experience for the Future
As the students returned to Dublin, they carried with them more than just the 3 ECTS credits—they gained a wealth of practical knowledge, cross-cultural collaboration experience, and industry insights that will serve them well in their future careers. The bootcamp’s emphasis on sustainability and innovation aligns with DCU Business School’s mission to prepare its students for leadership roles in an ever-evolving, globalised business environment.
For DCU Business School, this year’s International Entrepreneurship Bootcamp marked another successful collaboration under the Erasmus+ programme, highlighting the importance of experiential learning in higher education. As the world continues to face complex challenges, initiatives like these ensure that future leaders are equipped with the entrepreneurial mindset and skills needed to create sustainable solutions.
