I graduated from DCU Business School in 2017 with a degree in Bachelor of Business Studies, specialising in Finance. I now work in Sales as a Senior Account Manager at Google, Dublin and without being part of this course, I don’t think I could have landed my dream job.
Changing Degree
I initially started in DCU studying International Business with Spanish which I really loved as a course but I decided to make the tough decision to transition over to General Business Studies in my 2nd year. The reason for this change was because I decided that I personally preferred to do the internship in my 3rd year rather than the Erasmus year and this decision for me, was really pivotal. DCU was so supportive to me in making this change and really helped me to follow what I felt was best for me. I completed a one year internship with LinkedIn in 2015/2016 and this was one of the most eye-opening experiences I had as it completely changed my career path. I didn’t think that an internship would have much impact on my “real-life career” as I was always sure that I would end up in Finance one way or another due to that being where my strengths were academically – all of my top grades came from my finance based modules.
INTRA
During this internship experience (INTRA), I learned that my academic skills didn’t necessarily match what I was passionate about in a career. I learned that I actually really loved working with people and being externally facing, speaking to customers, all of which were learnings about myself that I couldn’t have gotten from my modules. I was fortunate enough to be able to do a rotation within LinkedIn despite entering as a Finance intern and this gave me a taste for multiple functions in a company. Once this year was complete, I completely changed my mind on a Finance career and decided I wanted to pursue something in Sales & Marketing instead.
I still specialised in Finance for my final year as it was still my strongest area academically and I applied for multiple jobs in big tech companies in my final year before being successful for an Associate Account Strategist role at Google in March 2017.
The DCU Experience
I have loved every part of the last 4 years in my job, learning and developing in a company that I used to dream about joining when I was younger and I really believe that without this course and especially the internship opportunity to gain the experience of working for a similar company, I wouldn’t have been able to land this dream job. DCU not only gave me some of the best years of my life while being there, but they’ve also helped me get even more great years out of my job after leaving.
