Design Wizard visit DCU Business School
We were delighted to welcome John Treacy (Head of Vector and Illustration) and Michelle O’Riordan (marketing associate) from Design Wizard to DCU last week (27th March).
Based in Cork, Design Wizard provides an online graphic design software which facilitates the creation of impressive visual content and designs without the need for technical expertise. The platform contains over 1.2 million images and 20,000 templates, professionally produced by their graphic designers and photographers.
As part of their course, the DICE (Digital Innovation Creativity and Enterprise) Business School undergraduate class are required to design informative and creative research posters pitching gamification topic venture ideas.
John, who is a graphic designer discussed many facets of creating good visual content, which could be applied from business cards to billboards. Planning, proofing and using a grid, were noted as key in the initial stages of design, as well as a deep knowledge of the audience and intended tone. In discussing design choices of colour palette and font combinations, John revealed some tricks for inspiring interest, shock, trust or fun. With colourful examples and personal insight, this workshop gave students much food for thought.
“Design Wizard are a great Irish entrepreneurial company, and their tool is useful and intuitive – we were delighted they were willing to collaborate. It is important we encourage students to develop an appreciation for good design in their content creation, and Design Wizard was the perfect fit for our module, and its ethos.”
Roisin Lyons (Assistant Prof. Entrepreneurship and Innovation, module co-ordinator of DICE)
The 101 DICE posters will be showcased in the Helix, DCU on April 10th from 1-5pm to coincide with the NC4 event. All are welcome to view the posters. On this day, Design Wizard will nominate the best designed poster award, where one lucky team will receive a free premium DW account for one year.
