ONLINE ABUSE IN SPORT WEBINAR Round 3

18th June @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Abuse in Sport R3

Background

You are invited to the third webinar on Online Abuse in Sport with Dr Kim Toffoletti (Deakin University). This webinar series is presented jointly by the FIA, DCU and the UAOA coalition. The aim of the series is to bring together scholars and sport industry stakeholders from across the globe to disseminate research, share experiences and develop collaborative projects on the subject of online abuse. Online abuse is a significant problem in sport, as it is recognised by the increasing media coverage, the growing attention it has received at an academic level and the development of initiatives such as the UAOA coalition.

Addressing Online Harm in Australian Women’s Sport

This presentation will discuss the findings of a government funded study into gendered online harms experienced by elite athletes in Australian women’s sport. Distinct from ‘big data’ studies that detect and categorise abusive messages direct toward women athletes, this research asks elite sportswomen about their experiences of online harm. It centres athletes’ voices and perspectives to shed new light on the consequences of negative online encounters and explore their gender-specific effects. Drawing from these insights, we offer a series of recommendations to improve the online safety of women athletes.
