Aviation is a force for economic and social development, encourages investment, stimulates infrastructure expansion that benefits various industries and has significant domestic and international economic linkages. These benefits, however, are provided at a high environmental cost. Locally, communities around airports often suffer from noise and air pollution. Around the globe, the carbon intensity of the aviation sector has posed significant challenges with respect to climate change adaptation and mitigation.

This taster lecture discusses:

• The environmental performance of the aviation industry
• The public reaction to aviation’s impact on the environment
• How regulators and various stakeholders have reacted to the pressure to control and mitigate negative externalities
• The complexity of environmental KPIs

Presenter: Dr Marina Efthymiou, Program Chair of MSc Aviation Leadership

Dr Marina Efthymiou is Assistant professor in Aviation Management and the course director of MSc Management (Aviation Leadership) at Dublin City University. Prior to this, she was working for the University of West London and before that for EUROCONTROL – the International Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation based in Brussels.
