Exploring Global Finance, Culture, and Leadership at SWUFE, China – Our Journey as DCU Representatives

Over 12 unforgettable days, we had the incredible opportunity to represent Dublin City University at the Summer Programme on Global Finance and Innovation hosted by Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) in Chengdu, China. Alongside students from around the world, we delved into the future of finance — exploring the intersection of Fintech, Global Markets, Sustainable Finance, and Cultural Intelligence.

Aysha’s Experience

For me, this program was a perfect blend of theory and experience. The sessions on Game Theory, Financial Ethics, and Web-Based Learning challenged me to think beyond traditional finance, pushing me toward a more responsible and tech-integrated vision for the future.

One of the most profound moments was our exploration of ESG frameworks and how sustainability is being redefined in global financial ecosystems. The Currency Museum visit stood out — witnessing the evolution of China’s monetary history felt like a journey through centuries of economic innovation.

A personal highlight? Participating in a Tai Chi session with finance professionals. It taught me how mindfulness can enhance clarity in decision-making, both personally and financially.

Swetha ’s Perspective

This was my first visit to China, and it exceeded every expectation. While the cultural richness of Chengdu filled every moment with wonder, what stood out most was the academic depth of the program. I found myself particularly engaged in sessions on Financial Regulation in the Digital Era and Sustainable Investment Strategies, where we explored real-world case studies and discussed how policy frameworks are evolving globally.

Participating in the Youth Leadership Forum was another highlight. Sharing the table with future leaders from different countries, we debated how technology can drive financial inclusion and reduce barriers in underbanked regions — a topic I am deeply passionate about.

Outside the classroom, I embraced every moment of cultural immersion — from mastering the art of a Chinese tea ceremony, to exploring the Kuan Zhai Alleys, and learning about the poetic legacy at Du Fu Cottage. And yes, meeting the giant pandas was an absolute joy!

This program reminded me that finance is not just numbers — it’s about people, cultures, and responsible impact.

Our Shared Takeaway

This journey wasn’t just about finance — it was about connection, perspective, and growth. We returned not only with enriched knowledge but with a renewed commitment to contribute meaningfully to our field.

Representing DCU on an international platform like this has been an honour. We are incredibly grateful to our university and the program organisers for this once-in-a-lifetime experience — one that will stay with us as we shape our paths in global finance and leadership.
