From DCU to Industry Leader: Suzanne Fowler’s Career Advice for a Shifting World of Work

In the first instalment of Dublin City University’s new Alumni Webinar Series, Suzanne Fowler, a 2008 graduate of the Bachelor of Business Studies programme, joined Professor Claire Gubbins for an insightful conversation on careers, recruitment, and the evolving world of work. Now Director of the Industry Division at Accountancy Solutions, Suzanne brought more than a decade of experience—and plenty of practical wisdom—to the session.

Hosted by the DCU Business School, the conversation opened with Suzanne sharing her journey from HR roles to recruitment consultancy. With a sharp sense of humour and grounded advice, she reflected on learning the recruitment trade from the inside, driven by a love of working with people and helping others progress in their careers.

One of the session’s core themes was the importance of taking ownership of your career. “Don’t wait for change—plan it,” Suzanne advised. Whether you’re fresh out of college or 20 years into your career, she stressed the value of setting goals, seeking feedback, and being proactive about development.

She also outlined key trends shaping recruitment: hybrid working is no longer a perk but an expectation; salary alone isn’t enough to attract top talent—culture, flexibility, and purpose matter more. Suzanne noted a growing focus on skills over qualifications, particularly outside traditional finance roles, and highlighted the increasing importance of digital literacy and adaptability.

The conversation naturally turned to AI—how it’s changing recruitment, the risks of over-automation, and the potential for accountants to evolve into more strategic, tech-savvy roles. Suzanne cautioned against relying on AI-generated CVs without substance, emphasizing that “people hire people,” and authenticity still matters.

The discussion wrapped with a nod to Ireland’s vibrant SME sector and a call to value local opportunities just as much as multinational names. “Some of the most meaningful, impactful roles are in smaller firms,” she said, where individuals can genuinely help shape direction.

Suzanne’s final takeaway? “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Judging by her energy and openness, it’s clear she walks the talk.
