From New Beginnings to Professional Growth: My Journey Down Under!

Seven years ago, I embarked on a journey that would change my life – moving to Australia, a country renowned for its diverse culture, thriving economy, and high quality of life. Leaving behind the familiar to embrace the unknown was both exhilarating and challenging, but it has been a transformative experience that shaped my personal and professional growth. Of course, every gain has its sacrifices – the void of your family and friends that you left behind will never be filled, technology is great for bridging the gap to some extent, but for me the yearly trips home become all that more special.
Embracing a New Way of Living
Settling into a new country is never easy. The initial months were a whirlwind, from adjusting to the humidity of Queensland, understanding the Australian twang (and them to the Irish accent!), to setting up from scratch regarding accommodation, a job and finding a new community of friends. Rome is not built in a day, and I can understand why people find it all too much and decide to return home – but if you push through those first few months, the rewards are worth their weight in gold.
The outdoor lifestyle, with barbecues, beach outings, and a huge emphasis on sports and fitness, was a refreshing change from the indoor-centric routines of my previous life. Brisbane is like the Galway of Australia; the pace of life is slower than your major hustle and bustle of city life, with its balance of urban convenience and natural beauty, it also offers ample opportunity to explore the East Coast and hinterland, making weekends a regular adventure!
Professional Growth and Opportunities
One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been my career progression within the realm of People & Culture. Australia offers a dynamic job market with opportunities for individuals willing to adapt and learn. Through hard work and perseverance, I found my place in my industry (Natural Healthcare), growing my skills and contributing to meaningful projects that truly make an impact of people’s lives. The established work-life balance, emphasis on innovation, and professional development opportunities have all played a crucial role in shaping my career – I’m excited as to what the next 7 years can bring!
Lessons and Reflections
My time in Australia has been filled with valuable lessons; resilience, adaptability, and an open mind have been essential in overcoming challenges.
Building a strong network is key – the Irish community here is a home away from home. For people ‘fresh off the boat’ there are so many communities and groups that you can reach out to for advice, support and resources – don’t be afraid to ask.
It’s ok to feel home sick, it’s part of the journey. Don’t suppress those feelings, talk about them and seek comfort in what works for you (A cup of Barrys tea and a facetime to home is my medicine!)
For me, living abroad has embedded the importance of patience and perseverance. From handling visa processes to adapting to different work cultures, I have learned that a proactive attitude is key to achieving – some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen!
I have learned to embrace a work-life balance that prioritizes both career ambitions and personal well-being. The Australian lifestyle has taught me to appreciate the small joys in life, like a 6am morning walk and coffee!
For anyone considering a similar move, my advice is simple: be open to new experiences, seek out opportunities, and immerse yourself in the community. It’s an opportunity to re-create yourself if you wish, a blank canvas and you’re the artist! There are endless possibilities that come with stepping out of one’s comfort zone – the question is, are you willing to find out?
