Glory Joseph – Caribbean Summer Placement
This summer myself, and a few other fortunate DCU students, were given the opportunity to set off to the Caribbean to complete a summer internship with Digicel for 10 weeks.
I worked as a group marketing intern and supported the two social media managers and the local marketing department with strategies, content creation, and planning.
One of my main goals for this internship was to leave more confident in my abilities and to enhance my creative side. As I reflect on who I was before the internship and consider myself now, I am proud to say that I have seen significant improvement in both areas.
The experience and learnings that I acquired from this internship are invaluable. I believe that all the tools I have gained will not only contribute to my professional goals but also my personal development aspirations. My managers took the time to share insights that I know I will hold on to for years to come. With their support, I was given the space to explore my creativity and to make mistakes, and improve. I must be honest, however, what I mainly looked forward to during those ten weeks was spending my weekends visiting beaches, hiking the majestic mountains, trying the delicious island cuisine, and truly experiencing beautiful Saint Lucia.
During our induction, a quote was mentioned that I have since held on to; “luck is when opportunity meets preparation”.
Opportunities such as this are very rare and hard to come by and I’m grateful that I was able to do my due diligence to research, plan and prepare myself so this great prospect didn’t pass me by. As a final word, I’ll say that working with Digicel has made it so clear to me that there is no end to learning. No matter where you go or how old you grow, there is always something new to learn. I’m glad that I can apply this custom of constantly learning into my own life as I now move into my next phase of acquiring knowledge; going on to complete a master’s degree in Digital marketing.
