Interview with Meiyi Yang杨美伊, DCU Business School Alumna on her DCU Experience & Career.
Tell us a bit about you?
I studied in Ireland for two years, and achieved a Bachelor of Business Studies at Dublin City University (DCU). I started my career in Beijing after graduation. I spent 5 successful years in GE Healthcare in marketing and sales roles. Currently, I work as a territory sales manager in a Start-up Healthcare AI firm which just completed D-round financing.
I love sports and travel. Actually before I went to Ireland, I didn’t like sports. During my time in DCU, it was convenient to go to the gym so I began to run. This good habit continued and I now insist on running every week and have started participating in Marathons. So far, I’ve accomplished 3 full Marathons as well as 8 half Marathons. I love travelling. I’ve been to 40 countries which span across Europe, Africa, Asia as well as Oceania. I planned to explore north America in 2020 but the epidemic erupted. Once the pandemic passes, I will continue my journey to discover more interesting destinations.
What was your overall experience of studying in DCU Business School?
I spent two unforgettable years in Dublin City University. Enrolling in an undergraduate programme in DCU Business School is one of the best investments I’ve ever made.
Academically, the programmes I engaged in were rigorous and extremely well designed which provided me with a sophisticated learning system to understand not only theories and methodologies, but also practical applications. Many of the modules offered opportunities to participate in real business scenarios.
The environment at DCU is great for business students. I was impressed by the on-campus business events, which provided us with great opportunities to meet with entrepreneurs and business personnel. Thanks to these events, we were given a more comprehensive and open-minded perspective to think about business issues. Furthermore, DCU gave excellent support for students on job seeking in various forms. We could join campus career talks that were held by employers, as well as consistently receive one-on-one tutorials on career development, mock interview, role play and resume workshop.
As an international student, I found the university to be friendly. I found that DCU’s orientation programmes allowed me to easily adapt to the new life and fit into new culture. We had plenty of opportunities to experience all the fantastic Irish sports, delicious local food as well as the beautiful city scene. There were lots of communities and societies for me to get involved in and I made lots of friends in Ireland.
Do you feel this programme has equipped you for your desired career?
Definitely yes! The lecturers are experienced with great research attainments. It made it much easier to connect the academic concept with latest business trends and practices. They also provided us with a challenging environment but meaningful that encouraged us to develop capabilities of critical thinking, innovation, preciseness and communication through case studies, group practicum, and business plan execution etc. I became more confident. All these new skills stood to me in my job interviews and helped to build my career.
Tell me about your career progression?
When I was pursuing my postgraduate programme in DCU, I had decided that I would start my career in China. After graduation, I came back to Beijing and worked in Kantar group, which is a market consulting firm. From this work, I clearly knew that healthcare is the industry I want to work for in the future, so I started to apply for new jobs and successfully got the offer from GE, a multinational company which covers healthcare, aviation and energy. I spent most of my career in GE in marketing and sales roles. I’m passionate and wiling to communicate with others, so I enjoy working as a salesperson. Two years ago, I realised that the Healthcare AI is the new trend. I started my current job, a territory sales manager in a rapid-growing startup firm in Healthcare AI sector. In terms of the long-term goal, I would like to pursue a product manager role which would be a new challenge for me but would also enable me to integrate my past experiences and capabilities that I have gained through my academic journey.
Why would you recommend the DCU Bachelor of Business Studies Programme?
I really enjoyed the programmes I studied and my two-year experience in DCU Business School. It was not only the experience of studying abroad but also the valuable skills and tools it gave me for my future career and life aswell as making me more confident. Firstly, the modules in the Bachelor of Business Studies programme are very practical based so it provides opportunities to analyse real business cases and simulate real management scenarios. This prepares students for scenarios such as how to run a firm. Secondly, I was impressed by the New Enterprise Development module. This module allowed me to deeply understand how to create a business plan from idea creation, market analysis to promotion. It enhanced my capabilities and feel that I could smoothly deal with similar situation in my career with confidence. Finally, DCU Business School organised gatherings which provided opportunities to talk with entrepreneurs who shared their experience about real business issues and how business works which is important for business students.
I fully recommend DCU Business School to anyone looking to study a business degree. It will be a fresh start for you, your education and will ensure a great beginning for your career.
