The Graduate Certificate in Aviation Sustainability, Leadership, and Innovation (ASLI) is aimed at developing practitioners in the aviation management space to enable them to lead sustainably, innovate and understand the regulatory environment in their organisations and beyond.
This progamme comprises four stand-alone Micro-Credentials, each worth 7.5 credits, which can be taken individually or as a block to achieve the Graduate Certificate. It has also been designed to be complementary to the MSc in Aviation Leadership, whereby students can continue their studies to achieve the MSc degree.

The first of these Micro-Credentials ‘Sustainable Aviation and Green Innovation’ takes place over 5 days in October and November 2023.
Module Description
Aviation’s environmental externalities need to be managed. The module aims to provide students with the knowledge and background to develop strategies and solutions for aviation to become more sustainable.
Emphasis is placed on innovative technologies and practices across the sector, like Sustainable Aviation Fuels, aircraft technology, Air traffic control procedures and airspace optimisation.
This module will focus on environmental economics and their application to aviation. It will elaborate on Local Air Quality, Noise Pollution and Climate Change. The cost of green technologies will be covered, along with the implementation complexity. The criticism of various measures, like biofuels, batteries, carbon capture and storage are central for this module along with the trade-offs of the various environmental actions.
What can you expect from this module?
On successful completion of this module students will be well placed to:
- Assess environmental policies and practices in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and feasibility
- Develop strategies for aviation to mitigate externalities, but also adapt to phenomena like climate change impacts
- Develop a critical understanding of how technology can enhance sustainability and its associated challenges, applying this to an organisational context
- Explore green solutions as a whole and evaluate which solution is appropriate for the short, mid and long term per sector of the aviation industry
