Pioneering the Future of Emergency Management: Digital Twin Innovations at DCU

Members of the Emergency Management Institute Ireland (EMII), experts from across the field of
emergency management, gathered at DCU Business School for an event showcasing the
transformative potential of Digital Twin technology. Organised by Professor Caroline McMullan on
behalf of the DCU’s Digital Twins for Impact (DT4I) and Dublin Fire Brigade’s Digital Twins for
Emergency Response (DTER) project teams, the event fostered engagement among leading
researchers, industry professionals, and the emergency response agencies, highlighting innovative approaches to enhancing risk and emergency management.

Bringing together experts from DCU’s Insight Centre, DCU Business School, and Dublin Fire Brigade
(DFB), the session featured cutting-edge presentations on how Digital Twin technology is
revolutionizing emergency response strategies. Dr Ali Intizar, Co-Principal Investigator of the project,
and Jaime Fernandez from the Smart DCU team, along with Robert Howell and Michael O’Donnell
from Dublin Fire Brigade, shared their expertise and findings on the practical applications of this
cutting-edge technology.

A highlight of the event was the live demonstration of Bentley Systems’ Digital Twin technology in
action, showcasing its real-world applications within DFB and DCU. The interactive session sparked
engaging discussions, led by Research Assistant Romal Thakkar from DCU Business School, on the
broader benefits and potential future applications of Digital Twins across various areas of risk and
emergency management.

Marking a significant milestone in the research, the event provided invaluable insights to shape the
future of risk and emergency management. It also underscored DCU’s leadership in risk and
emergency management, highlighting a commitment to fostering innovative, data-driven solutions
for building resilient organisations and communities across the island of Ireland.

Follow our journey as we continue to explore the future of emergency management with Digital
Twin technology. In 2025, the DT4I and DTER projects will merge to form DT4I+. The enhanced
project is designed to position DCU as a model of good practice in pre-incident planning, risk and emergency management, and overall campus resilience.
