Professor Caroline McMullan Presents Groundbreaking Risk Research to the Institutional Meeting of North South Ministerial Council
Professor Caroline McMullan had the honour of presenting an overview of her research to the Institutional Meeting of North South Ministerial Council at Dublin Castle last week. The presentation marks a significant milestone in her ongoing contributions to public policy, particularly in the areas of national risk management and island resilience.
In her address, Professor McMullan shared key findings from her research, which focused on three critical areas: a comprehensive national risk assessment, the importance of cross-border communication in emergency management, and the outcomes of the FUTUREPROOF-IE research project. The FUTUREPROOF-IE project, conducted in collaboration with fellow researchers Ann Largey, Gavin Brown, and Research Assistant Niamh Reilly from the Business & Society Research Cluster at DCU Business School, provided recommendations for building a more effective approach to horizon scanning and risk management.
One of the central themes of her presentation was the national risk assessment, where she highlighted the growing complexities of identifying and managing risks on both sides of the border. Professor McMullan emphasised the importance of cross-border communication and safety messaging, underscoring the importance of an all-island approach to addressing key risks.
The FUTUREPROOF-IE research project, which took a collaborative approach to studying cross-border resilience, offered valuable insights into how Ireland and Northern Ireland can strengthen their readiness for future challenges. The project’s findings present strategic recommendations for building a more resilient society.
Speaking to the Council, Professor McMullan expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to present this critical body of work. “It is an immense honour to be able to contribute to such an important dialogue,” she said, “and to offer research that I hope will play a part in shaping the future of cooperation between the North and South.”
The presentation not only showcased the vital role of academic research in shaping policy but also reinforced Professor McMullan’s leadership in the field of risk management and her commitment to fostering resilience and collaboration across the island.
