Overview
This is a scholarship which covers full fees for one student (EU or non EU) each year in DCU’s full-time MSc in Digital Marketing. Established in 2008, this scholarship was set up to honour the memory of John Thompson, one of the Ireland’s leading newspaper executives. With a career spanning almost 30 years in the business, John was instrumental in the launch and commercial development of some of Ireland’s most successful and enduring publications including U Magazine, The Sunday World and The Irish Farmers Journal.
He was Chief Executive of Associated Newspapers Ireland, publishers of the Irish Daily Mail and Irish Mail on Sunday and former Managing Director of Independent Star Limited and publisher of the Irish Daily Star. John believed that the disciplines of journalism and marketing reinforce each other in eliciting consumer engagement, paving the way for commercial success. This scholarship aims to foster links between digital marketing and online journalism by encouraging graduates of business, journalism and more diverse educational backgrounds to study digital marketing integrated with an appreciation of media and online journalism.

Kate Minogue, John Thompson Scholar (2021)
I was living in Melbourne when I applied for the John Thompson scholarship. When I applied for this scholarship, Melbourne was in the middle of a strict lockdown and I decided to make the move home. I was delighted to have been selected as the recipient for this scholarship and it made the move home a lot easier.
I have thoroughly enjoyed studying this masters. It has given me a deeper understanding into the theory behind many digital marketing practices, and has given me exposure to many popular industry technologies. The lecturers have given us a great understanding into the pace in which digital marketing is continuously evolving, providing a good insight into the importance of continuous upskilling in this industry.
