Dr Marina Efthymiou is an Associate Professor in Aviation Management and the course director of MSc Aviation Leadership and Graduate Certificate in Aviation Sustainability, Leadership and Innovation at Dublin City University. Prior to this, she was working for the University of West London and before that for EUROCONTROL – the International Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation based in Brussels.
Marina holds a PhD in Sustainable Aviation Policy, an MSc in Tourism Strategy, and a BSc in Business. She is a recognized national and international expert in Sustainable Aviation and Air Transport Management and is frequently called to participate in policy discussions (e.g. OECD, European Commission, European Parliament), present at industry conferences (e.g. IATA ADS, GAD, Air Finance Leasing, CILT,) and comment on radio and print (e.g. RTE brainstorm, Irish Times). She regularly acts as an expert evaluator for the European Commission and has been involved in various projects like the ICAO Action Plan.
Marina sits on the editorial board of a number of aviation peer-reviewed academic journals. She is also a member of the German Aviation Research Society and the Hellenic Aviation Society. Marina sits on the executive committee of the European Aviation Conference (EAC) which combines commercial and academic entities and the Aviation Management and Economics Conference (AMEC). She was also part of the TUD COST Action Air Transport and Regional Development (ATARD) and the CA COST Action for advancing effective institutional models towards cohesive teaching, learning, research and writing development. In 2022, she won the DCU President’s Award for Distinctive Approach to Innovation in Teaching. She was also the academic advisor in the EUROCONTROL funded project ‘Digitalisation of Military Aviation’. She leads the industry-funded project Diversity and Inclusion in Aviation and other funding applications.
In the past 5 years, she has published more than 30 papers in peer-reviewed prestigious academic journals, including Annals of Tourism Research; Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice; Journal of Air Transport Management; Journal of Cleaner Production; Journal of Safety Research. Her research interest primarily focuses on Sustainable Aviation, Air Navigation Service Providers, Air Traffic Management/Control, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), and airline and airport business models. In 2017, she won the distinguished accolade of ‘Best Research’ paper from the European Aviation Conference, which was sponsored by Ashgate Publishing (Taylor & Francis Group) for her work on Emissions Trading Scheme in Aviation. Marina is also a regular reviewer for a number of esteemed academic journals. She is an external examiner at a number of educational institutions that offer aviation courses.
Marina is an IATA instructor and she has delivered executive training courses on behalf of IATA, AACO, DCU or independently for various companies on a number of topics (sustainable aviation, Green airports, Sustainability Strategy, Cost reduction strategies, Aviation and tourism, Airline marketing, Aviation fundamentals).
In the coming months, her book ‘Air Traffic Management – Principles, performance, markets’ will be published by Taylor and Francis/Routledge.
