Last-Minute Leap, Lifelong Lessons: My ECIU Experience in Italy

Simran Dureja, MSc in Management (Strategy) student at DCU Business School, recently took part in one of the most transformative experiences of her academic journey—participating in the “Shaping the Future of Chocolate” Challenge at Universita Di Trento under the ECIU University umbrella.

Simran’s message to fellow students is clear: embrace the unexpected and say yes to opportunities, because they often lead to the most unforgettable journeys. Read her full reflection below:

“A few weeks ago, if someone had told me I’d be standing in Trento, Italy, working with a team of international students on a B2B chocolate strategy, I might not have believed them. But here I am, writing about one of the most eye-opening, joyful, and enriching experiences I have had during my time at DCU.

I was selected for the “Shaping the Future of Chocolate” challenge under the ECIU umbrella. At that point, my biggest hurdle was the visa. With such short notice, I wasn’t sure I could make it. I applied through the fast-track route, but the available appointment dates were way past the challenge dates. Honestly, I had made peace with not going. But something kept pushing me to try just one more time.

Thanks to a lot of persistence and a sprinkle of good fortune, I received the invitation letter from the University of Trento, and with strong support from the DCU International Office, everything aligned. The Italian Embassy responded quickly and granted me the visa just in time. It felt like the universe had quietly worked things out in the background. Holding that visa was one of the happiest and most relieving moments of my academic life.

When I landed in Trento, I was greeted by a new energy. Everything felt vibrant and exciting. I was about to work with students from all over the world, each bringing their own backgrounds, cultures, and ways of thinking. Despite all our differences in language, age, and disciplines, we connected instantly. Our challenge was to help Foreverland, a small but passionate chocolate company in Italy, find new ways to enter the B2B market.

It was not just a simulation or an academic task. We spoke directly with the challenge provider and dived into their internal strategy and real market concerns. The fact that they trusted us enough to open up about their journey made me feel valued. We weren’t just learners anymore; we were contributors. The late-night group walks, spontaneous strategy pivots, endless idea boards, and shared snacks turned into memories that will stay with me for a long time.

There was also something comforting in how we bonded outside the formal sessions. Laughing over dinner, figuring out public transport together, and cheering each other on, it reminded me that growth happens not only in classrooms but also in small shared moments.

Just when I thought the experience couldn’t get better, we transitioned into the ECIU University Forum. It was a celebration of innovation, education, and global thinking. We got to hear from professors, student ambassadors, and academic leaders who are shaping the future of learning in Europe. I was especially proud to see DCU receive the Impact Award, a moment that filled me with pride and a sense of belonging.

The forum brought more than just knowledge. It brought celebration, collaboration, games, music, and joy. It felt like being part of something much bigger than myself, a network of people who truly believe in the power of cross-border learning.

One of the most touching parts of the challenge was realising how quickly strangers could become teammates and how a problem about chocolate could teach us about trust, creativity, and strategy. And being in Italy? That added its flavour- amazing food, warm hosts, sunny weather, and conversations that flowed long after the sessions ended.

If I could give one message to other students, it would be this: when opportunities like this come along, take them. Even if they come at the last minute or feel uncertain. Say yes. Because somewhere between all the stress and excitement, you might just find something unforgettable.
